Public Leaders Courses
The Government Equalities Office is working in partnership with the Common Purpose About Time campaign, to launch two brand new programmes:
The About Time Public Leaders courses are designed to increase the diversity of public body board members and the pool of talented individuals ready to take up public appointments, with wider representation including women, ethnic minorities and disabled people.
Public bodies need board members to help make important decisions that shape the quality of our lives and public services. Boards that have a diverse mix of people and talent make the best decisions.
Playing an active role in civic society through joining the board of a public body can be extremely rewarding, whether you want to expand your skills, are looking for a career development opportunity or simply want to make a positive difference in your community.
The About Time Public Leaders Courses are fully funded and supported by the Government Equalities Office, and are free to attend. The courses are designed and delivered by Common Purpose.
About Time Public Leaders (Advanced)
About Time Public Leaders (Advanced) is a course for people who are actively seeking a national public appointment. Applicants may have already applied or been shortlisted for a public appointment, or be in senior positions in their organisation. The course presents an opportunity for potential candidates to develop their non-executive careers, gain a deeper understanding of how public boards work and the difference that public bodies can make.
About Time Public Leaders (Advanced) is a flexible, five-month course delivered by Common Purpose, that addresses the needs of individuals, particularly those from under-represented groups, who have the aspiration and ability to get involved on public boards at a national level. Applicants for this programme should be committed to applying for regional or national public appointment in the next 6-12 months.

About Time Public Leaders
About Time Public Leaders is targeted to people who have not yet begun to apply for a national public appointment, but have some experience of local governance, for example gained through local boards, charity trusteeships, employment or professional bodies, or those who have demonstrable experience gained in other ways, and have a real commitment to hold more senior appointments, at a regional or national level.
The About Time Public Leaders course is designed by Common Purpose to provide participants with transitional learning to make the leap to holding regional, national or higher profile public appointments. We particularly welcome applications from those groups who are currently under-represented in public appointments. Applicants for this programme should be committed to applying for a public appointment in the next 12-18 months.

About Time Mentors
Could you be a mentor? Can you help inspire participants in their journey to become public leaders through your own experiences in governance and public appointments? Do you have specific skills and knowledge that would help the participants be successful in their public life applications and careers? Are you an experienced non-executive director who can help and advise those wanting to hold senior public appointments?
The Common Purpose About Time Campaign is putting together a list of mentors, willing to donate as much or as little time as they are able, to help those on the public leader training courses realise their non-executive aspirations.
